My reading inventory includes books that I read for enjoyment, but also to help me get through certain situations in my life. I get to basically "live" through someone else's life and learn from them. I really like to feel connected to someone else who is going through similar situations as myself or to learn about someone else's struggles that I know nothing about. I guess you could say these books become my own inspiration. For example, I have read for both entertainment and advice, Crash Course In Love by Steve and Joann Ward. These two are mother and son and also professional match makers. They had their own show on Vh1 helping people find out what they are doing wrong in the dating world. During this time, I was in a very unhealthy relationship. Not only was I able to break free of the relationship, I also understood why I chose these types of men. I'd say I did my "therapist" proud.
Another good example is a book written by 50 Cent. (Yes the rapper.) It is called 50 Cent Playground :The Mostly True Story of a Bully. I have to admit I really enjoyed this book. Many books are inspiring about overcoming being bullied but no bully has actually written a book explaining their side of the story. It really brings perspective that every person is struggling is some way, shape, or form. I also experienced being bullied by an old boss of mine who I could clearly never be good enough for. Reading this book made me realize that there wasn't anything wrong with me, it was something she struggled with herself. Even though I thoroughly enjoy the types of good I read, I realize I need to push myself outside of my comfort zone to become a better reader. I have made up a new reading inventory of what I plan to read.
1. Catch 22 by Joseph Heller
2. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austin
3. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
4. The Hero With a Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell
5. Seize The Day by Saul Bellow
6. The Ocean At The End Of The Lane by Neil Gamon
7. Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk
8. Drown by Junot Diaz
9. The Art of Dramatic Writing by Lajos Egri
10. The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer
11. The Illiad and The Odyssey by Homer
12. Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn
