As I sit here and remember who I was even before I started
this class, I know that moving forward I will never look at movies or books the
same. I’ve noticed that after my boyfriend and I get finished watching a movie,
we have these big discussions about how we knew what was going to happen or why
a piece of paper was so important to the character. It’s funny because he calls
me a dork because I really enjoy school, reading, and writing. I think if he
wasn’t lazy, he’d really like all those things too. He is using all the methods
in our conversation and he doesn’t even know it!
Whenever I think of a reflection, I picture one door closing and stepping into a new one. We reflect on what we left and how we learned from it and move forward with new information. As I close the door on How Writer’s Read, I am now ready to take on the rest of my Writing Arts classes. I am now bringing my methods to my readings instead of just strolling along for the ride. Most importantly, I am learning from other writers in their narratives how to become a better writer myself. Before doing this class and doing all the work we’ve done up to this point, I couldn’t figure out why I couldn’t bring myself to finish my book that I started writing years ago. Through our class discussions and Professor Kopp pushing us to “put ourselves out there,” I realized that it was because what I write matters. I want it to be good enough.
Sometimes during class or during my readings, I found myself having moments where I was like “Ohhh so that’s what he was talking about!” By the time I got to my second book, I started to feel more confident in writing my blogs because I felt like I knew what I was talking about and I knew what methods applied to that particular book. I really started to enjoy being creative and my blogs kept getting more personal and I realized how much of a difference my writing was impacted by that. I also noticed that I started to get inspired with different writing ideas when I notice things that the author missed or where the author could’ve gone and I get excited to write about it. For example, I started to imagine what Pride and Prejudice would be like if it was recorded on reality t.v. like the Real Housewives of New Jersey. Who knows? That might be a book I write one day.
As I step into my next door, I am so glad that I have learned so much in so little time and I feel excited to be what I practice.
